COLLEGE BASKETBALL: THE MASTER'S WOMEN SHINE IN BAHAMAS SENIOR GUARD NAMED MVP.

NEWHALL -- A brief trip to the Bahamas was a successful way to send The Master's College women's basketball team into the holidays on a high note.

The Mustangs won both of their games at this week's Bahamas Sunshine Shootout Shootout

The Mustangs finished the tournament Tuesday with a 79-58 victory over Roger Williams University Roger Williams University, commonly abbreviated as RWU, is a private, coeducational American liberal arts university located on 120 acres in Bristol, Rhode Island, above Mt. Hope Bay. Founded in 1956, it was named for theologian and Rhode Island cofounder Roger Williams.  of Rhode Island to earn a share of the tournament championship.

On Monday, The Master's (6-1) defeated Ursuline of Ohio 79-51, taking an 11-0 lead and never looking back. The Mustangs shot 47 percent from the field.

Mittel led the way on both games. After scoring 13 points against Ursuline, she had her second-highest scoring total of the season Tuesday with a game-high 24 points and three assists and three steals.

The Mustangs return to action on Thursday in the GSAC GSAC Golden State Athletic Conference

 Challenge at Azusa Pacific, where they open the two-day event against Holy Names.

Sharp shooters: The Master's scored a season-high 11 3-pointers against Roger Williams. The long distance shots came from a variety of sources. Among those contributing 3-pointers were Mittel, Briannae Yahn, Jennifer Ayers-Stamper and freshmen Lisa Chenoweth, Shayla Corder and Tana Palmason.

The Mustangs are shooting 37 percent from beyond the arc this season -- second-best in the Golden State Athletic Conference The Golden State Athletic Conference is a college athletics conference in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The conference commissioner is Dr. Cliff Hamlow of Azusa Pacific University. Conference leadership is shared among the member institutions.  -- with 51 3-pointers through seven games.

Twice as nice: Mustangs sophomore forward Stacy Nanninga had her second career double-double in Monday's win over Ursuline. She contributed 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Nanninga is averaging 8.6 points and six rebounds a game.

Honored: College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  sophomore Melissa Tachias was selected Western State Conference women's basketball Player of the Week for scoring 43 points with 21 rebounds and 10 steals in two games last week. She was 19 of 25 from the field. Her biggest game came in a 97-56 victory over Riverside in which she scored 25 points with 14 rebounds and seven steals. Tachias, a 6-foot forward from Poly of Sun Valley, entered the week as the WSC's third-leading rebounder, averaging 12.1 rebounds a game.

Up next: After a three-day break, COC See chip on chip.  returns to action Wednesday at the Lady Jag Classic in San Jose. The three-day event is the Cougars' final tuneup before beginning WSC WSC Winter Symposium on Chemometrics
