The players in the starting lineup are commonly referred to as starters, whereas the others are substitutes . T.K. Reed was used to being noticed as an All-City basketball player at Sylmar High, but his willingness to be a role player - especially defensively - keeps his value high as a freshman at Moorpark College Moorpark College is a California-state funded community college located on a 134 acre (542,000 m²) property reclining on a hill in Moorpark, a town in Ventura County, California. . ``It's it's 1. I was the scorer, I could pass, take care of the defense. Now I could still contribute. . . but I try to do what the team needs. If I can help defensively, that's what I do.'' Defense is vital in the Raiders' success since they rank near the bottom of the Western State Conference in scoring. Moorpark's defense, however, ranks first and has led the Raiders (12-3) to eight consecutive wins and three tournament titles, including a championship at last week's Glendale Glendale. 1 City (1990 pop. 148,134), Maricopa co., S central Ariz., adjacent to Phoenix; inc. 1910. The Raiders had five players score in double figures in Saturday's final, but their leading scorer only had 14 points in the 66-60 victory against Bakersfield. ``We always talk about if we're going to win, it's going to be by out-defending teams, not outdoing them offensively,'' Moorpark coach Remy McCarthy said. ``Defense starts with not allowing penetration from the point, and (Reed) does that well. ``Our way of thinking is, if it's 66-60, we're going to be the one that wins. But if it's 92-88, it's probably not going to be us winning. ``We have a good defensive team. (Reid)'s our best defender. He takes pride in defending. We talk about him quite a bit because defense is so important to this team.'' As much as McCarthy likes the 6-foot-8 point guard, he is pressed to find room for Reed in the starting lineup. A year ago, when the Raiders were an inconsistent, young team with just one returning player, Reed would likely have filled a similar role to the one he had in high school. Reed, 18, is among the WSC's assist leaders and impresses McCarthy with his quickness, anticipation and toughness. ``There's not very many teams in the state he wouldn't start on,'' McCarthy said. ``He's very good. We've talked to him about it, and he understands. How did Reid end up at Moorpark? One of his coaches from Sylmar suggested the Raiders and introduced Reed to McCarthy at a tournament. Even though there are other junior colleges closer to home, where he might play a more high-profile part, the Raider's success is enough to convince Reed he made the right choice. ``There's the defense,'' he said. ``But we just have so many weapons, so many different ways we can beat you.
