Byline: Daily News Wire Services

Playing on the road against a team with the tradition and success of the University of Texas, defending national champion USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  was hit with the news Friday that victory would have to be achieved the old-fashioned way.

The old-fashioned way didn't work for the Trojans, but worked rather well for the Longhorns (3-0), who defeated USC 5-3 in the opener of a three-game series at Disch-Falk Field.

The Trojans (1-1), ranked No. 1 by Baseball America This article or section is written like an .

The document arrived late Friday, and the teams will use aluminum bats for the remainder of the series - scheduled to resume today at 1 p.m.

Texas used wooden bats in a game for the first time in 25 years.

``Well,'' Texas coach Augie Garrido said, ``it was certainly a lot quieter during batting practice.''

He was the third overall pick in the 1999 amateur draft by the Detroit Tigers, behind Josh Hamilton and Josh Beckett.  also added an RBI double for the Trojans.

The Longhorns were led by pitching and defense. Three pitchers - Scott Dunn Scott Allen Dunn (born May 23, 1978 in San Antonio, Texas) is a pitcher for the Oakland Athletics. And in the ninth, with a man on and Munson at the plate, Seibel induced a double-play ground ball to end the game.

``I think this will help our confidence,'' Garrido said. ``We did a lot of good things.''

Several of these came from Dunn, who gave up one earned run and struck out eight in six innings. He caught Munson looking at a called third strike with two on to end the second and ended a fourth-inning threat with another called third strike.

A triple by Tommy Nicholson launched a two-run third off USC starter Rik Currier - another potential All-American - and Jeff Ontiveros drove in two more in the fourth with a double into the left-field corner. The final Texas run came in the sixth when Ben Emond pushed a run-scoring single through a hole vacated by USC shortstop Seth Davidson on an attempted pickoff pick·off
