COLLEGE BASEBALL ROUNDUP: WAVES CAN'T GET THE SWEEP.

University of San Francisco     [  sophomore left-hander Scott Cousins made sure Pepperdine's baseball team didn't leave the Bay Area with a series sweep.

Cousins pitched 8 1/3 strong innings, retired 15 batters in a row at one point and his teammates pounded out 17 hits as the Dons handed the Waves an 8-2 loss, Pepperdine's first West Coast Conference loss of the season, on Sunday.

Pepperdine (18-9, 7-1) only had five hits, led by Chad Tracy's two, and couldn't get much of anything going against Cousins (7-1).

Cousins gave up five hits, two runs and struck out five.

CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  (12-14-1, 0-3) scored all of its runs when it took a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning. Luke Riordan had a run-scoring single and Alberto Quintana, who was 4 for 5 at the plate, followed with a two-run single.

Cal Poly (20-12, 3-0) only got four hits off CSUN starter Jimmy Brettl (two runs, five strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings) but reliever Peter Eberhardt (3-1) gave up one hit and two runs - one earned. Eberhardt walked two and struck out two in 3 2/3 innings.

CSUN had nine hits off four Cal Poly pitchers. Bud Norris (3-0) pitched one inning to get the win for the Mustangs and closer Mike Bille went the final 1 2/3 innings to earn his 10th save of the season.

 2: The Wildcats, one day after beating the Bruins 11-0, completed a three-game Pacific-10 Conference series sweep of host UCLA with another strong offensive showing.

Arizona (21-10, 5-1) got 16 hits (five extra-base hits), eight walks and had two hit batsmen off five UCLA pitchers. Trevor Crowe, Jeff Van Houten and Jordan Brown each had three hits for Arizona.

UCLA, which lost its 13th consecutive game, managed only six hits - all off starter David Coulon. Arizona reliever Eric Berger threw 5 2/3 innings of shutout relief.

Tommy Lanadon and Chris Denove each drove in a run for UCLA (7-17, 0-3).
