COLLEGE BASEBALL ROUNDUP: TROJANS DROP DOUBLEHEADER TO STANFORD.Byline: Daily News USC couldn't hold a lead by day, but Stanford failed similarly by night. Both teams came from ahead to blow comfortable margins in their nonconference doubleheader at Dedeaux Field on Saturday. The unranked Trojans rebounded from a 9-6 opening-game loss to the No. 1 Cardinal to rally and erase all of a seven-run deficit in game two. USC tied the game 10-10 and sent it to extra innings before Stanford prevailed for a 12-10 11-inning victory in front of what remained of a crowd of 1,154. Trailing 7-0 and then 9-3 in the second game, USC collected just three hits between the fifth and eighth innings. But the Trojans scored seven times in that span assisted by Stanford miscues: six walks, a three-base error that scored three runs, two balks and a wild pitch. But in the 11th inning, Stanford scored twice to take a 12-10 lead that held up for the final score, Westlake High product Scott Dragicevich knocking in the go-ahead run. The sweep of the Trojans came four days after a 31-7 annihilation at Loyola Marymount that established new school records for futility. Saturday's games were the Trojans' first this season at Dedeaux Field, which is undergoing a $4 million renovation, including new grandstand seats, a yet-to-be-completed Hall of Fame area and home clubhouse on the first-base side. - Chris Cocoles --Miami 8, UCLA 7: UCLA pitcher Billy Susdorf, from Hart High in Newhall, gave up two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning for a nonconference loss at Miami (13-12). Ben Francisco was 2 for 5 for the Bruins (13-14), including a three-run triple in the third inning. Francisco later would score in the inning, and Casey Grzecka's solo home run gave UCLA a 5-1 lead. --CSUN 3, Oregon State 2, susp.: The game in Corvallis, Ore., was suspended in the top of the fourth inning due to rain and will be made up today at 9:30 a.m. --Pepperdine at St. Mary's, ppd.: The game was rained out for the second consecutive day. A doubleheader is scheduled for today at 11 a.m. |
