Pepperdine starting pitcher Jacob Barrack admittedly wasn't at his best. But Fresno State's slumping offense bailed him out and allowed the host Waves to win 3-1 Sunday and complete a three-game sweep in Malibu.

The Bulldogs' .242 team average explained how coach Mike Batesole's lineup could include those hitting just .222, .171, .158, .130 and .040. But they had plenty of cracks to take advantage of Barrack (1-1), who helped stretch a winning streak to four games for the Waves (7-4).

``I didn't throw very well early on, I let them get into a lot of chances to score runs,'' Barrack said. ``I wasn't very effective, but once runners got on base luckily I got out of it.''

Fresno State (4-10) scratched out a run in the first thanks mostly to Hart High of Newhall product Ryan Haag, who singled, stole second, hustled to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Kyle Atrat single.

But for the rest of the game, Barrack (six innings, six hits, four walks, six strikeouts) stranded five runners in scoring position (Fresno State left 13 on for the game).

Paul Coleman contributed a scoreless inning from the bullpen, and Steve Kleen worked out of a bases-loaded mess in the eighth and a first-and-second situation with one out in the ninth for his first save.

``Jacob was in a lot of jams, and he managed to not get rattled and continued to make his good pitches,'' Pepperdine coach Frank Sanchez said. ``But he was living on the edge and that was a little scary, too.''

On a day when the Waves' two most consistent batters, shortstop Kevin Estrada and right fielder Cory Brightwell, went a combined 0 for 7, their biggest at-bats came from freshmen. Michael Beattie, Danny Kelly and Brandon Daguio drove in the runs. Daguio was 2 for 3 with a solo home run in his college debut.

--Stanford 18, USC 4: Stanford's Danny Putnam went 3 for 4 with two three-run homers and seven RBI at Sunken Diamond.

Cardinal hitters accounted for five home runs on the afternoon after USC had allowed only three homers all season.

--Cal State Fullerton 7, UCLA 1: No. 2 Fullerton scored six runs in the second inning and the Bruins (10-10) never could catch up, finishing in second place at the Kia Baseball Bash in front of 2,057 fans at Goodwin Field.

Bruins first baseman Wes Whisler was named co-Outstanding Player after recording two home runs, five runs and four RBI in three games.

--LMU 8, San Jose State 7: Matt White's two-out base hit in the ninth inning off Spartans relief pitcher Jose Amaya scored Lions freshman Chris Pettit to complete a five-run rally.

--San Diego 12, Cal State Northridge 0: San Diego (7-11) scored 10 runs in the top of the sixth inning, and pitcher Aaron Wilson threw a complete-game, two-hit shutout.
