Chris Kelly's home run with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted Pepperdine to an 8-7 victory over Santa Clara in a West Coast Conference game Friday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.

It was Kelly's second home run in as many days against the Broncos and was his team-leading ninth of the year. Pepperdine (14-16, 4-2) has won three consecutive games for the first time this season.

Kelly, Cory Brightwell, Duke Sardinha and Ty Harper each had three hits for the Waves, whose first six hitters were a combined 16 for 28. Senior Rock Mills and junior Ed Montague each had two hits.

After building a 7-3 lead through six innings, Pepperdine watched Santa Clara rally for four runs on four hits to tie the score in the seventh.

Greg Ramirez relieved starter Brandon Boesch after he he worked the first six innings and allowed 10 hits and seven runs while walking two and striking out five.

After the shaky start, Ramirez settled down and retired the final seven batters he faced to improve to get the win and improve to 1-2.

The series concludes today today at 1 p.m. at Pepperdine.

--Santa Barbara 5, CSUN 4: CSUN ace Bill Murphy allowed four hits and one earned run over seven innings and struck out seven batters in the Big West Conference loss.

Phil Polanco gave up two runs on two hits in only two-thirds of an inning and took the loss for the Matadors (19-11, 1-1), who play the series finale today at 1 p.m. in Santa Barbara.

The Matadors offense struggled, the number one through six hitters finished the day a combined 2 for 21 with two RBI.

Northridge third baseman Jason Gorman, a Palmdale High graduate, was 3 for 4 with a triple and two RBI. Second baseman Shaun Larkin hit a home run, his 11th of the season.
