COLLEGE BASEBALL ROUNDUP: CLEMENT POWERS USC PAST CONFERENCE FOE CAL.

Byline: Daily News

Jeff Clement was 4 for 5 and hit his 10th home run of the season, leading No. 25 USC past host Cal 5-4 in Pacific-10 Conference play on Saturday.

Clement's homer moved his career total to 41 - fourth overall in USC history and two behind Eric Munson of the Minnesota Twins, who played for USC from 1997-99.

Matt Cusick's sacrifice fly scored Billy Hart in the top of the ninth to give USC (26-11) the lead for good. Hart finished 3 for 4 for the Trojans, who have won 12 of their last 15 games.

Cal (25-18) took the lead in the fifth inning when Garrett Bussiere hit a home run off USC starter Jack Spradlin in the second inning. Spradlin gave up four home runs.

Spradlin's bad day was salvaged by a solid bullpen performance. Freshman Anthony Encinas pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings to pick up his third win and Paul Koss threw a perfect ninth for his ninth save of the season.

USC will play the final game of the three-game series at 1 p.m. today in Berkeley.

--Pepperdine 7, Gonzaga 5: David Uribe went 3 for 5 with three RBI and a stolen base as Pepperdine defeated host Gonzaga (24-15, 11-5) in West Coast Conference play.

Paul Coleman (6-0) pitched six innings for Pepperdine (26-13, 12-4), while allowing two earned runs on seven hits for his sixth win of the season.

Chad Tracy added two RBI for Pepperdine and teammate Patrick Rooney went 2 for 5 with a double and an RBI.

--UC Riverside 2, CSUN 1: Jimmy Brettl pitched a complete game - allowing one earned run and striking out five batters - but it was not enough as CSUN (13-22-1, 0-11) lost in Big West Conference play to visiting UC Riverside (17-19, 3-5).

Brettl (0-6) was outdueled by Taylor Bills, who pitched a five hitter and struck out four batters.

CSUN's lone run came in the bottom of the ninth on a RBI double by Michael Paulk that drove in Drew Aguailar.
