COLLEGE BASEBALL NOTEBOOK: EARLY INJURIES TAKE TOLL.

Byline: Lee Barnathan Daily News Staff Writer

USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  baseball coach Mike Gillespie There are 3 sports coaches with the name Mike Gillespie:
  • Mike Gillespie (baseball coach)
  • Mike Gillespie (basketball coach), Mike Gillespie, Sr., head coach for Florida A&M Rattlers basketball
  • Mike Gillespie, Jr., assistant coach for Florida A&M Rattlers basketball
likes what he sees in his team. The pitching is deep and just about all the positions have been won as the Trojans prepare to open defense of their 12th national championship on Feb. 2 against CS Dominguez Hills.

There's just one problem. It's a big problem and it's the same one that plagues several of the other local teams: One injury has caused a major lineup reshuffle.

In USC's case, it's shortstop Seth Davidson, out until at least mid-February with a broken jaw he suffered when a thrown ball hit him in the face.

Here is the domino effect: Justin Gemoll, who would have started at third base, moves to shortstop. Freshman Beau Craig - who would be the backup catcher - moves into the starting lineup For the line of action figures, see .
A starting lineup in sports refers to the set of players actively participating in the event when the game begins. The players in the starting lineup are commonly referred to as starters, whereas the others are substitutes
 at third base, for now.

Actually, Gillespie would be shuffling the lineup even without Davidson's injury. He has numerous options at designated hitter designated hitter

and Barre, a freshman, has won the starting left-field spot for now.

This reshuffling obviously hasn't been noticed by the pollsters. USC is ranked first in three preseason polls and third in another.

``Polls are healthy in creating interest,'' Gillespie said. ``We have a team that by the end of the year is a team that can compete with everyone else.''

A look at the other area teams:

Pepperdine: One injury has also caused Waves coach Frank Sanchezto reshuffle his lineup. Senior third baseman G.J. Raymundo, the team's No. 3 hitter last year with a .345 average and 13 home runs, broke a bone in his forearm when he was hit by a pitch in a scrimmage earlier this month.

Sanchez sees three options while Raymundo heals (no word on when he's expected back).

The coach, in his third season, could move sophomore catcher Dane Sardinha (.263, 13 HRs) to third base and let senior Mike Kramer (.309, 5 doubles, 14 RBI RBI

Or he could move freshman shortstop Tony Garcia to third base, or he could put Garcia in center field and move Duke Sardinha to third base. Sanchez also could move junior second baseman Damon Katz to third, but he hasn't determined who would go to second.

``We're in the process of experimenting, trial and error, to figure out the lineup,'' Sanchez said. ``In the early going, it will be game-by-game.''

The first game is Friday at home against Nevada.

Loyola Marymount: The Lions won the West Coast Conference last year and are picked by the WCC WCC n abbr (= World Council of Churches) → COE m (Conseil œcuménique des Églises)

coaches to do it again. Coach Frank Cruz doesn't think so.

 birds,'' he said.

Cruz actually escaped the one-injury-causing-a-reshuffle situation but just barely. Pitcher Mike Schultz, from Cleveland High, got hit in the leg with a ball, but he suffered just a mild bruise and won't miss a start. The Lions open Feb. 3 at home against CS Dominguez Hills.

One battle has been won: Westlake High graduate Matt Riordan is the starting center fielder.
