COLLEGE BASEBALL; GORDON PROVES VERSATILE SECOND BASE NOW HOME.

Byline: Heather Gripp Staff Writer

At this rate, Zach Gordon could be an expert at every infield position by the time he graduates.

The former All-Marmonte League baseball player from Royal High in Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  spent most of his prep career and first season at Moorpark College Moorpark College is a California-state funded community college located on a 134 acre (542,000 m²) property reclining on a hill in Moorpark, a town in Ventura County, California.  as a third baseman third baseman

this season, Gordon learned to play that position, too.

``I'm making my way around,'' he said. ``We had a hole to fill, so I'm filling it.

``It's different. You have to learn the footwork and get used to the ball coming at you from a different angle and things like that. I'm adjusting. I feel comfortable.''

Gordon is slated as Oregon State's starting second baseman when the Beavers open the season Feb. 4 at the Spalding Baseball Fiesta in Albuquerque, but the junior could also see time at shortstop this season as the young team looks for a steady leader up the middle.

Indians reunion: Former Hart teammates Andy Davidson, Bobby Graves, Eric Horvat and J.T. Stotts remained teammates when they all went to Cal State Northridge. This season, their former coach joined them. Bud Murray, who retired as the Indians head coach after last season, became an assistant coach for the Matadors. Stotts and Horvat are slated as starting infielders and Davidson and Graves are left-handed pitchers.

No waiting: Highland High alumnus ALUMNUS, civil law. A child which one has nursed; a foster child. The freshman is one of two Matadors vying for the starting catching job, which would put him in the same lineup as his former Golden League rival Jason Gorman. Gorman, a sophomore from Palmdale, is starting at third base for the second consecutive season.

On the mend: Injuries have plagued former Quartz Hill pitcher Mark Madsen's entire career at Loyola Marymount, allowing him to pitch just a handful of innings his first two years. How well he recovers from offseason shoulder surgery will determine how much the junior right-hander plays this season, but the Lions aren't expecting him to be available when they open their season Feb. 4 at California.
