COLLEGE BASEBALL: WAVES GET ONE HIT IN LOSS PEPPERDINE CAN'T CONVERT FEW CHANCES VS. HOUSTON HOUSTON 2, PEPPERDINE 0.

Byline: Chris Cocoles Staff Writer

MALIBU - Danny Zell was at times wild, and the Houston pitcher put Pepperdine into more scoring opportunities than Waves hitters created for themselves.

But it didn't matter that Zell walked two, hit two more and threw a wild pitch. Nor was it a factor that his shortstop messed up a routine throw to first. Or that his catcher was charged with a passed ball.

Pepperdine struggled with the bats Saturday and lost 2-0 to the No. 11 Cougars in a Battle at the Beach tournament game.

The Waves (1-1) mustered just one hit against Zell (seven innings INNINGS, estates. Lands gained from the sea by draining. Cunn. L. It got away with just five hits in Friday's 1-0 victory over Washington.

But the Cougars (1-1) scratched out single runs in the fourth and seventh innings and encountered little duress duress (dy`rĭs, d`–, d  throughout the Waves' at-bats.

into my pitching thing and made them off-balance even more.''

The Waves had precious few opportunities to break through against Zell: Kevin Rooney's leadoff single in the third; Zell hitting the first batter in the next two innings; his back-to-back walks to Cory Brightwell and Ty Harper with one out in the sixth.

, who drove in a team-best 50 runs in 2002, grounded into two double plays during that stretch.

``I'm not down on it. We'll be there,'' said shortstop Kevin Estrada, whose home run that beat Washington on Friday represents the bulk of the Waves' offensive output through the first two games. ``Our guys can hit the ball, right now it may be a little frustrating frus·trate

 we're going to be there.''

Estrada's confidence makes sense. Though the young club did have two freshmen in the lineup Saturday, the top four hitters in the order are seasoned. Estrada spent two seasons at Florida before sitting out as an injury redshirt last season. Brightwell, Harper and Kelly are returning starters and drove in at least 40 runs.

``We hit the ball at people all day. And (Zell) was pretty good,'' Harper said.
