Zito's strikeouts, which tied his season-high, pumped life into most of the crowd of 1,044 on a chilly night. He also showed most of the dozen pro scouts behind home plate his best pitches against the heart of UCLA's order: Chase Utley Chase Cameron Utley (born December 17, 1978) is a Major League Baseball second baseman for the Philadelphia Phillies. Those three Bruins, who entered the game with a combined batting average of .338 and 37 home runs, were a combined 0-for-12 with six strikeouts.

``Those are the guys you have to bear down on,'' said Zito, who didn't allow a hit after the second inning.

Zito won his eighth consecutive game and improved to 9-2. He is 2-0 with 24 strikeouts and 2.40 ERA in 15 innings against the Bruins this season.

The only major mistake Zito made was in the second, when he gave up Nick Lyon's second homer of the season. From the third to the sixth, Zito retired 12 of 13.

Zito struck out at least one batter in every inning and he struck out the side in the second. He pitched his second complete game of the year.

USC lost two of three against UCLA in March - and that was with All-American catcher Eric Munson (who went 0-for-14 in that series). The Trojans have won 23 of their last 30 and are tied with Stanford for first in the Pac-10.

UCLA sophomore left-hander Ryan Carter made his first conference start and gave up seven hits and three earned runs in seven innings. Carter threw 142 pitches, the most by a UCLA pitcher this season.
