COLLEGE BASEBALL: KARP WINS HOME DEBUT AS UCLA ROMPS 12-3.

UCLA freshman Josh Karp made his long-anticipated home debut a historic one on Saturday, yielding six hits in five innings as the Bruins defeated Georgia Tech 12-3 for coach Gary Adams' 800th career victory.

Chase Utley, Jason Green, Adam Berry, Randall Shelley and former Alemany High star Bill Scott contributed two hits each as UCLA ran Adams' record at Westwood to 800-648-7, a .552 clip for his 24 seasons with the Bruins. Berry homered twice and Utley once as UCLA (3-5) outhit Georgia Tech 13-7 while dropping the Atlantic Coast Conference Yellow Jackets to 2-3.

In other games Saturday:

Texas 9, USC 8: The host Longhorns (4-0) capitalized on five Trojans errors leading to seven unearned runs in handing coach Mike Gillespie's defending NCAA champions a second straight loss at Austin, Texas.

Dominic Correa led the USC (1-2) attack with three hits, including a two-run homer.

The Master's 14-16, Simpson 0-0: Rob Avila struck out seven in the opener and Mike Ploharz had nine strikeouts in game two as the Mustangs (6-2) swept at home to run their series totals against first-year Simpson (0-3) to three wins, 47 runs scored and no runs yielded.

Southern Utah 11-12, CS Northridge 7-10: The Thunderbirds (4-5) outscored the Matadors 6-2 in the final three innings of the opener, then put together a 10-2 rally in the last two innings of game two to complete a nonconference sweep at Northridge (5-5). Adrian Mendoza, Kevin Patrick, Jason Gorman, J.T. Stotts and Matt Synhorst all had two-hit games for the host Matadors.
