COLLEGE BASEBALL: BRUINS RECEIVE HELP WINTHROP ERRORS SPARK UCLA WIN UCLA 2, WINTHROP 1.

Byline: HEATHER GRIPP Staff Writer

After losing two-thirds of last season's weekend rotation to the Major League Baseball draft The First-Year Player Draft is Major League Baseball's primary mechanism for assigning amateur baseball players, from high schools, colleges, and other amateur baseball clubs, to its teams. , UCLA's baseball team is counting on an experienced offense to help the Bruins live up to their preseason national rankings.

Tyson Brummett is still waiting to see that offense.

Brummett, a senior right-hander moving up to the Bruins' No. 1 starter role, got the win in Friday's season opener against visiting Winthrop, but was aided more by the opposition's errors than his own team's hitting.

The Bruins, who ranked seventh in the nine-team Pacific-10 Conference The Pacific-10 Conference (Pac-10) is a college athletic conference which operates in the western United States. It participates in the NCAA's Division I. Membership

Tim Stewart and Mickey Weisser, who both went 2for4, were the only Bruins with multiple hits.

UCLA's Brandon Crawford scored to tie it at 1-1 in the first inning before a series of wasted opportunities ensued.

The Bruins loaded the bases with one out in the third, but an infield fly and a strikeout ended the inning without a run.

Babineau hit a one-out triple to center in the fourth, but was stranded when the next two batters popped up.

An inning later, the Bruins had runners on the corners with one out but a strikeout by Casey Haerther and groundout by Cody Decker derailed the potential rally.

Babineau sacrificed Tim Murphy to second in the sixth, but back-to-back pop-ups prevented Murphy from advancing any further.

Winthrop sophomore right-hander Alex Wilson surrendered one unearned run on six hits and three walks with five strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings. Ryan Mullins (0-1) allowed one hit in 2 1/3 innings.
