His performance, Bryan said, was enhanced by winning the team title and competing five days in a row.

``I haven't taken a day off since the tournament started . . . so I'm playing pretty sharp,'' he said.

`I'm just riding the wave right now - from the Pac-10 championships and the whole season. Every time I win, I can enjoy this a little more.''

Teammate Ryan Wolters, the No. 7 seed, also advanced to today's second round by defeating Ashley Fisher of Texas Christian University Texas Christian University, at Fort Worth; Christian Church (Disciples of Christ); coeducational; opened 1873 at Thorp Spring, chartered 1874 as Add Ran Male and Female College.  a team title, is undefeated so far in the tournament.

UCLA senior Eric Taino advanced after overcoming a 3-6 first-set loss to South Alabama's James John with a 6-1, 6-3 finish.

``I was waiting for (John) to give me points (in the first set), but in the second and third sets I was more aggressive,'' said Taino, who led the Bruins all season at the No. 1 spot. ``If you lose, it's no big deal, but to lose without intensity is the worst thing you can do.

``I feel fresh, really confident because I've had three really good matches so far (from the team event). I feel like I might even have an edge since I've been through a lot (this week).''

It's another story for Bruins Alex Decret and Matt Breen.

Decret was knocked out of the tournament after losing 7-6 (7), 6-3 to former doubles partner Matthieu Ballay of Mississippi State. Both natives of France, Decret and Ballay played together in juniors tournaments for the French team for almost five years. Wednesday's match was their first collegiate meeting. Decret will have another chance at advancing in the tournament when he plays doubles with Taino today.

Breen, the junior from Australia, said UCLA's loss to Georgia in the semifinals on Monday affected his performance against Ludde Sundin of Kentucky.

``Being out there on the same court I lost on (against Georgia's Kevin Sessions) did come up in my head,'' Breen said. ``It was pretty difficult. Monday's loss really hurt us all a lot.''

Sundin defeated Breen 6-2, 1-6, 6-1.

Meanwhile, USC's lineup leader George Bastl, who compiled a 21-5 regular-season record, swept Doug Root of Duke 6-3, 6-2. Teammate Patrick Gottesleben, the No. 2 singles player for the Trojans, lost to Olivier Tauma of Virginia Commonwealth 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-4.
