Workers will be trained for jobs in local industries under the terms of a $200,000 partnership between College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. The estimated cost to train each worker is $1,500, which will be offset by funds from state unemployment insurance, said Carter Doran, COC's assistant superintendent Assistant Superintendent, or Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), was a rank used by police forces in the British Empire. ``There's one-tenth of 1 percent tax that the employers pay into when they pay their unemployment insurance. Any employer subject to that tax is eligible to apply for the Employment Training Panel funds,'' said Ron Tagami, development manager at ETP's North Hollywood office.

``We're going to train 160 workers in the next 18 months,'' Doran said. ``When the workers complete their training and they remain on the job for 90 days, (COC See chip on chip. ) will be reimbursed for having trained them.''

Under the terms of the pact with the state, the college assumes 75 percent of the program's costs up front, and the Valencia Industrial Association carries the other 25 percent.

``The employers and the college have to put out the money for the training, and then the state will reimburse us after the training is done,'' Doran said.

``We're trying to meet the needs of the employers in our area,'' Doran said. ``This allows the college to provide training needs that the local employers identify.''

Dena Maloney, director of College of the Canyons' employee training institute, said the state ETP program is not a free perk for employers at college expense.

``They've already paid into that fund. They're now accessing those funds to help retrain re·train

``Part of the mission of the college is to help support the economic development of the region,'' Maloney added. ``We're also focused on providing training to local employees to help businesses remain competitive, to attract new companies to the area, and to upgrade the skills of workers in the region.''
