COLISEUM PLAN GETS OK FROM KEY CITY PANEL RENOVATION CENTRAL TO LURING NFL.

Byline: RICK ORLOV Staff Writer

A key city panel gave its approval Tuesday to an $800 million renovation of the Memorial Coliseum For other similar named athletic facilities, see .

Memorial Coliseum (or Veterans Memorial Coliseum in some cases) can refer to:
  • Alexander Memorial Coliseum, Atlanta, Georgia
  • Allen County War Memorial Coliseum, Fort Wayne, Indiana
that is key to Los Angeles' effort to acquire a National Football League franchise.

The Cultural Heritage Board voted 4-0 to accept the proposed reconfiguration of the stadium -- basically building a new facility within the historic structure -- while preserving the Coliseum's national landmark A National landmark is a site identified by a national authority as one possessing nationally–significant natural, historic, or scientific resources. Typically, it identifies an isolated site and not a landscape or complex of sites better suited to management as a national  status.

``This is not a decision we take lightly,'' board Chairwoman Mary Klaus-Martin said. ``We are talking about a historic landmark that is an important treasure.''

Even as the board recognized the need to utilize the structure, it also realized the landmark's role in the revitalization of downtown and its potential use for future Olympic Games Olympic games, premier athletic meeting of ancient Greece, and, in modern times, series of international sports contests.  offered a detailed one-hour presentation of their efforts to preserve the Coliseum while accommodating the needs of the National Football League and upgrading the facility.

The Coliseum underwent a seismic retrofit after the 1994 Northridge Earthquake The Northridge earthquake occurred on January 17, 1994 at 4:31 AM Pacific Standard Time in the city of Los Angeles, California. The earthquake had a "strong" moment magnitude of 6. , but has had no significant work since.

Klaus-Martin and other Cultural Heritage Board members said they were pleased with the plan -- particularly the effort to dramatize dram·a·tize

The plan also would expand and raise the ground level of the Coliseum and build a canopy-style addition above the Coliseum, but within the confines of the bowl.

The panel's approval was one of several needed in advance of a May 22 meeting of NFL NFL

The renovation proposal now goes to the city Planning Commission and the Community Redevelopment Agency, with the City Council set to consider it May 19.

The NFL owners are said to be very interested in returning professional football to Los Angeles, which used to have both the Raiders and the Rams.

Los Angeles is competing for a team with Anaheim, which has an environmental impact report already prepared for a 70,500-seat venue next to Angel Stadium.

Pasadena also proposed bringing a team to the Rose Bowl. Its City Council decided Monday to put a measure on the November ballot asking voters whether the city should offer the NFL a 50-year lease on the Rose Bowl in return for renovation of the facility.
