Both schools share a common well behind Hart High.

School officials are now awaiting results of retests of the water supply before taking further action.

``We've had five to six false positives before, so it's a little premature to draw any conclusions,'' said Mike Bahnmaier, director of maintenance for the William S. Hart Union High School District.

If the retests are positive for coliform bacteria, the school district could be required to buy water from the Newhall County Water District, officials said.

``We save a lot of money by using our own well water,'' Hart Principal Gary Fuller said. ``We hope they can recommend some kind of water treatment that will take care of the problem.''

Coliform bacteria alone isn't harmful, but it is an indication of the presence of harmful bacteria found in raw sewage.

Water drawn from the well is not treated before it is piped into the schools, Bahnmaier said, but it has historically met all state drinking water standards.

``It's pure ground water,'' he said. ``We don't chlorinate chlo·ri·nate

About 1,200 students are enrolled in summer school at Hart High. Several said they were disgusted after finding the notices appearing on school water fountains.

``It's yucky, nasty and gross,'' said Christopher Hayes, 18. ``It's hot and a lot of people want to drink, but they can't.''
