Researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Centre found a single bacterium, Klebsiella, was more common in babies with colic, with around 15 per cent of healthy infants suffering from the painful condition. Professor Marc Rhoads, who led the research, said deaths could be prevented if scientists could devise a treatment. However, he said more research would be needed to discover if Klebsiella can be controlled by using "probiotics Probiotics Bacteria that are beneficial to a person's health, either through protecting the body against pathogenic bacteria or assisting in recovery from an illness.
