COLDWELL BANKER RELOCATION SERVICES INC. AND ARCHIVE CORP. NAMED STERLING AWARD WINNERS

COSTA MESA, Calif., June 3 /PRNewswire/ -- The first Sterling Awards were awarded June 1, to Coldwell Banker Relocation Services Inc. and Archive Corp. Competing against 19 organizations in the selection process, which included interviews with senior management and on-site visits, the judges determined that Coldwell and Archive best represent the ideals of the Sterling Award.
More than 250 people attended Orange County's first annual Sterling Awards reception. Founded by the Sterling Council in 1991 to recognize and enhance quality improvement efforts in the business, government and not-for-profit sectors of the community, the entries for this year's Sterling Awards included well-established and up-and- coming Orange County organizations. The awards ceremony, held at the Irvine Barclay Theatre, featured Dr. D. Bruce Merrifield, the "father" of the Malcolm Baldrige Award.
Located in Mission Viejo, Calif., Coldwell Banker Relocation, a subsidiary of the Coldwell Banker Residential Group, provides domestic and international relocation services to companies of all sizes, structure and industry. Founded in 1965, the company's growth has taken place primarily during the last eight years where it moved from sixth to second place position in market share of the relocation industry.
Employing approximately 500 people, the company formalized its quality/continuous improvement program in 1991, codifying many of the customer-oriented programs that had been developed over the five past years and which they believe accounts for its tremendous growth in size, profitability and reputation in the relocation business.
Archive Corp., headquartered in Costa Mesa, designs, manufactures and sells tape drives and tape subsystems that are used with personal computers, work stations, multiuser systems and mainframes for data backup and exchange, software distribution and archival storage. Founded in 1980, Archive pioneered streaming 1/4-inch tape drive technology and, today, is one of the world's leading manufacturers of tape drives.
Quality plays an integral part of Archive's long-term success strategy. The company has developed and implemented strategic plans for achieving customer satisfaction through improved quality service and, at the same time, reducing costs at not only Archive but at its suppliers and customers as well.
Receiving the Sterling Award was Stephen C. Roney, president and chief executive officer of Coldwell Banker Relocation and Jess Parker, senior vice president of Worldwide Operations for Archive Corp.
"The excitement generated from the Sterling Award clearly demonstrates that Orange County is committed to excellence," said Ronald L. Merriman, area managing partner of KPMG Peat Marwick, one of the corporate founding members. "Our community's dedication to providing quality, be it products or services, can only enhance Orange County's position in the global community."
Entertaining the crowd with his views on the importance of quality, Dr. Merrifield's presentation focused on the need for encouraging innovations in technology, as well as how new technologies are improving a business' ability to provide quality products and services.
During the Reagan Administration, Dr. Merrifield was assistant secretary of Commerce for Productivity, Technology and Innovation. At the Department of Commerce, Merrifield's office was instrumental in initiating the Malcolm Baldrige Award, the National Technology Medal and the program of small business shared "Flexible Computer Integrated Manufacturing Centers." A consultant to the American Electronics Association, he currently holds the Walter Bladstrom Chair for Professor of Management at the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business.
The Corporate Sales Division of Tiffany & Co., South Coast Plaza, was contracted to design and execute the actual Sterling Award. The perpetual award will be displayed at various sites in Orange County, accompanied by a plaque naming the winners for each year, while the recipients were given smaller versions of the perpetual award.
The Sterling Council, which has 18 corporate members, was founded in 1991 to promote quality improvement in the Orange County community. The founding members are KPMG Peat Marwick, the Graduate School of Management at UC Irvine and the Orange County Edition of the Los Angeles Times.
