ENGLAND'S cricketers should hope the current sunny weather doesn't last through the Ashes series This is a list of Ashes cricket series played between Australia and England. Researchers have found the old enemy's success on home pitches may not be down to superior skill but could be largely due to the Pacific ocean climate phenomenon El Nino.

Ignoring "whingeing Pom" accusations, Reading University's Walker Institute analysis of Ashes matches in Oz from 1882 to 2007 shows the home team won 13 out of 17, or 76 per cent, in lower-than-average rainfall and unusually high temperatures.

But in La Nina years - the opposite phase of the phenomenon causing wetter conditions and lower temperatures - the Aussies won only five out of 13 matches, or 38 per cent.
