CODGERS COUGH; Sisters Liz and May own up to pinching student's purse.

 Codgers unmasked in yesterday's Mirror sparked the biggest granhunt in police history.

But now we can all sleep soundly knowing the two old dears who nicked a student's purse have been caught.

Elizabeth Mullins, 64, and her 74-year-old sister May McGowan got police cautions yesterday after admitting theft.

 the Grey Twins - turned themselves in after they were pictured with the 20-year-old student's bag at Sunderland railway station.

At her bungalow bungalow [Indian bangla,=house], dwelling built in a style developed from that of a form of rural house in India. The original bungalow typically has one story, few rooms, and a maximum of cross drafts, with high ceilings, unusually large window and door  in the city's Springwell area, Mrs Mullins said: "It is not like we have killed somebody. I did not steal the bag. I picked it up and then handed it in."

And she proved no criminal mastermind under questioning:

Mirror: You were with your sister... Mrs Mullins: I have nine sisters. Mirror: Which one were you with? Mrs Mullins: She just lives around the corner, I am not going to give her name. Mirror: What's she called? Mrs Mullins: May McGowan.

The pair told police they had taken the purse out of the bag, then changed their minds about stealing it and put it on a bench. It was never recovered.

Pc Gavin Alcorn of British Transport Police The British Transport Police (BTP) is a special police force[1] empowered to police those railways and light-rail systems in Great Britain for which it has entered into an agreement to provide such services.  said: "They have accepted a caution and admitted theft.

"They say they realised they had done something wrong, so they discarded it. They claim they did not take the money.

"It is the most unusual case."
