COCKLERS DEMAND.


A TOP churchman yesterday called for justice for the 20 Chinese cocklers who died in the Morecambe Bay Morecambe Bay, shallow inlet of the Irish Sea, 16 mi (26 km) long and 10 mi (16.1 km) wide, separating Furness peninsula from the mainland, NW England. It receives the Kent and Lune rivers. Shrimp are caught there, and its extensive tidal flats are cockling grounds.  tragedy.

At a memorial service in Lancaster the Archbishop of Liverpool, the Most Rev Patrick Kelly, said: "We pray such a tragedy will not happen again.

"The tragedy of Morecambe Bay demands questions are asked and the inquiry is searching, rigorous and thorough."

More than 500 attended the service at the city's cathedral, including members of the emergency services emergency services Emergency care '…services …necessary to prevent death or serious impairment of health and, because of the danger to life or health, require the use of the most accessible hospital available and equipped to furnish those services'  who battled to save the lives of those who drowned in the rising tides.
