COCA-COLA ROXY THEATRE TO LIGHT LANDMARK MARQUEE

ATLANTA, Feb. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The Coca-Cola Roxy Theatre will light up the night in Buckhead on Thursday, Feb. 18, when Dr. Jeffrey Babcock, director of the Cultural Olympiad, officially turns on the new marquee.
The unofficial Mayor of Buckhead, Sam Massell, will act as Master of Ceremonies.
The lighting ceremony will take place in Buckhead Park directly across from Roxy beginning at 6:15 p.m. The actual lighting will take place at 6:40 p.m.
The marquee, recently constructed at a cost of over $50,00, reflects a partnership between the intimate concert theatre and The Coca-Cola Company. Taking approximately six months to design and build, the new marquee was developed by JBP and Associates.
The lighting is timed in conjunction with the performance of Norwegian alternative artist, BEL CANTO. Babcock is spearheading this week's salute to Norway, the first cultural exchange between two Olympic cities, Atlanta and Lillehammer, and the first appearance of pop culture in the Cultural Olympiad.
The Roxy Theatre, an Atlanta landmark, has been in continuous operation since 1939 when it opened as a neighborhood movie theatre. It remained a movie theatre until being converted to a performing arts venue in 1979 by legendary concert promoter Alex Cooley. In 1992, Cooley, Peter Conlon and Selig Enterprises bought the venue and renovated the theatre at a cost of over $500,000.
Since the renovations, the theatre has played host to some of the biggest recording artists in the business including Gladys Knight, David Byrne of the Talking Heads, Ron Wood of the Rolling Stones, Glenn Frey of the Eagles, Peabo Bryson and comedian Steven Wright.
Located at the intersection of Peachtree and Roswell roads, the new Coca-Cola Roxy marquee is expected to become one of the major landmarks in the Atlanta area.
