COC-Modified PE Films Help Stiffen Stand-up Pouches.Cyclic olefin copolymer Cyclic Olefin Copolymer (COC) is an amorphous polymer made by several polymer manufacturers. COC is a relatively new class of polymers when compared to polypropylene and polyethylene. (COC See chip on chip. ) engineering resin is making its commercial entry in the role of property modifier for LLDPE LLDPE Linear Low Density Polyethylene packaging films. New England Extrusion (NEX NEX abbr. Navy exchange ) in Turners Falls, Mass., is one of the first U.S. firms to produce films based on LLDPE/COC blends, which are said to offer cost-cutting potential in form-fill-seal stand-up pouches. NEX's mono-layer Inflex films are said to offer superior stiffness and clarity for replacing existing mono-layer and coextruded structures. Ticona in Summit, N. J., supplies the Topas COC used to add stiffness, clarity, gloss, slip, hot-tack strength, as well as sealing speed. The 1- to 8-mil films contain up to 25% COC. Inflex MO466, aimed at labels and vertical form-fill-seal pouches for food packaging, has 72% higher MD secant secant, in mathematics. 1 In geometry, a secant is a straight line cutting a curve or surface. If it intersects the curve in two different points, as in the secant of a circle, the segment of the secant between the points is called a chord. modulus, 22% higher gloss, and 22% lower haze than straight PE. Inflex M927, which has the highest COC content, exhibits secant modulus values that are 163% (MD) and 125% (TD) higher than a competing stand-up pouch film. That plus higher seal strength makes it a candidate for replacing more costly coextrusions. |
