COC WOMEN READY TO END WAITING GAME; COUGARS MEET NO. 12 MOORPARK.

Byline: Rizza Yap Daily News Staff Writer

College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  women's basketball Women's basketball is one of the few games which developed in tandem with men's. It became popular, spreading from the east coast of the United States to the west coast, in large part via women's colleges.  coach Greg Herrick said there's a price for earning a first-round bye in the Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  Regional tournament. It's called waiting, and it's usually accompanied by restlessness.

On Wednesday the Lady Cougars will play for the first time in 10 days, their longest stretch without competition since early December. They will host No. 12 seed Moorpark College Moorpark College is a California-state funded community college located on a 134 acre (542,000 m²) property reclining on a hill in Moorpark, a town in Ventura County, California. , which defeated College of the Desert 68-48 in a first-round matchup last Saturday. Herrick expects practice to intensify now that the game is only one day away. Last week, he said, players lacked their normal fire; even sophomore guard Wendy Gussner noticed.

``We've been lackadaisical lack·a·dai·si·cal

, but I talked to the girls about it on Friday, and we're going to start picking it up,'' Gussner said. ``With all this time off, we don't get the high of anticipation during practice. We're just so used to playing so many games (each week), that we got worn out thinking about one game that's 10 days away.''

Gussner is especially bogged down by several obligations this month. As one of the team's top scorers, she is looked to by the other Lady Cougars for leadership and consistency. She ended the regular season by scoring more than 20 points in three different games and enters the week averaging 11.5 per contest. Academics also are a high priority for Gussner, who has a 4.0 cumulative GPA GPA

Gussner and fiance Mark Pinson, a Valley student, are set to marry at the L.A. A morning ceremony includes a small gathering of family members, but the reception will welcome about 400 guests.

Wednesday's matchup against Moorpark will mark the second meeting between the two teams. On Jan. 8, Canyons (26-7) defeated the Raiders (21-10) 75-62 at home. But Moorpark's recent playoff history has Herrick a little worried. Last year, the Raiders advanced to the state tournament by upsetting two teams. Although the Lady Cougars have the height advantage and feature two players - forwards Laura Tweedy and Maxine Unverferth - who score at least 14 ppg, Moorpark is known for its hustle and hard work. The Raiders also are strong shooters from the perimeter, which could wreak havoc on the Canyons defense.

``We don't want to be the next-round upset,'' Herrick said. ``Moorpark is a playoff team, and they're here for a reason. If we get overconfident o·ver·con·fi·dent

, we'll be watching the next round, not playing.''

The Lady Cougars, two-time defending champions of the Western State Conference South Division, are entering the regionals with a 12-game winning streak, starting with a 98-67 victory against rival Valley on Jan. 21. Canyons also has scored more than 100 on five occasions and has outscored regular-season opponents by an average of 25.3 ppg.
