VENTURA - The final score on a chilly Saturday night from Ventura High was College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. ``Those guys came here with a purpose,'' Canyons coach Chuck Lyon said. ``And it showed.''

The Cougars (8-0, 5-0 Western State Conference) established a record for the best start in school history. And Beck played his best game at the school, finishing 17 of 24 for 319 yards and three touchdowns in only eight series of work.

But it was the postgame handshakes for the transfers with former teammates and coaches that marked the true significance of Saturday's game.

``I was excited to come in and see everybody; it was a good time just seeing guys again,'' said Beck, who also rushed for 73 yards. ``But it was just another game - with some friendly faces.''

At the end of the Pirates' 6-4 season in 2002, Beck, Hawkins and Crawford each transferred to Canyons, albeit for unrelated reasons. They stepped into starting spots immediately and have been major contributors to Lyon's team.

Crawford finished with two touchdowns and 64 yards rushing. Hawkins, meanwhile, caught two touchdowns from Beck.

``I was very excited,'' Hawkins said. ``Playing my old teammates. I just wanted to have fun out there. It was kind of hyped, but we wanted to play it like any other game.''

The answer to how the three would play was given on the Cougars' first drive. Beck connected on a 34-yard flea-flicker pass, Crawford bulled over tacklers on two 12-yard runs and Hawkins caught a 9-yard touchdown from Beck to make it 7-0.

Canyons rolled to a 31-0 halftime lead, and the three transfers accounted for 91 percent of the Cougars' total offense.
