VALENCIA - One week after College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  trustee Ron Gillis allegedly disclosed confidential information Noun 1. confidential information - an indication of potential opportunity; "he got a tip on the stock market"; "a good lead for a job"

Gillis, who has been a trustee for 10 years, was the first to show up for the meeting. He is accused of disclosing confidential real estate negotiations both in an open meeting and with a candidate running for the college board.

``I didn't want to be late for my own hanging,'' Gillis said before entering a private dining room to wait for the other trustees.

If passed, Gillis' censure would be the first in the college's 35-year history.

``I've never seen anything like this,'' trustee Bruce D. Fortine said. ``It's not going to do any good for us, that's for sure.''

``I could have made it difficult,'' Gillis said after leaving the meeting. ``The attorneys cited government code and said if the majority of the board voted to exclude me, they could.''

Gillis described the atmosphere on the board as adversarial ad·ver·sar·i·al

For example, if a nation should lay a very heavy tariff on American goods, the United States would be justified in return in laying heavy duties on the manufactures and  because he has spoken for the minority on a variety of issues, making him unpopular with the board.

``I think it has to do with my voting against President Dianne Van Hook getting a raise and against forcing our part-time faculty into a union against their will,'' Gillis said, adding that the upcoming elections also likely played a role in the board's action.

The drama began Aug. 10 when Gillis openly questioned the difference in appraised values An appraised value (USA) or mortgage valuation (Australia) pertains to the assessed value of real property in the opinion of a qualified appraiser or valuer. The board opted to buy the land for the higher of the two appraised values.
