According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  has emerged as one of the most dominant teams in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  with its modern passing offense.

But with its hopes of a possible state championship playoff berth on the line, the Cougars showed a decidedly old-school look, as Stephen Stokes carried the ball on each play on a nine-play, 47-yard scoring drive, to lead the visiting Cougars to a 21-20 victory over Valley College in a Western State Conference Northern Division regular-season finale for both teams.

It wasn't the type of victory the Cougars (9-1, 6-1), the top-ranked passing team in the conference, are accustomed to, but Stokes will take it.

``It was little nerve-wracking, we like to win a little more comfortably, but it's nice to know we can win games like this when we need to,'' said Stokes who gained 116 yards on 20 carries.

The Monarchs (2-8, 2-5) had an excellent scoring opportunity when Darold Butler intercepted Winn at the Cougars 34 and returned the ball to the 10, but three plays later Roderick Thomas mishandled a handoff from quarterback Dallas Enoch, and the Cougars recovered the fumble.

A solid Valley defensive stand forced the Cougars to punt from their own 14, and after fielding a bad snap, Daily barely managed to unload an incomplete pass An incomplete pass is a term in American football which means that a legal forward pass hits the ground before a player on either team gains possession. But the Monarchs capitalized, as Juan Ozuna kicked a 20-yard field goal to make it 17-7.
