COC READY FOR SHOOTOUT; GLENDALE (2-5) HURT BY TURNOVERS.

Byline: Lee Barnathan Daily News Staff Writer

The College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  football coaching staff watched game videotape of its next opponent, Glendale College.

them, Glendale had the Western State Conference's best offense.

So, coach Chuck Lyon wondered, why is Glendale 2-5?

``It's a mystery to me,'' Lyon said, ``just like I imagine it's a mystery to them.''

It will be up to the Cougars, ranked seventh in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, , 10th in the state and 24th in the nation, to solve the mystery when the two teams meet tonight at 7 in a WSC WSC Winter Symposium on Chemometrics

North Division game. It's also Canyons' final home game and completes a stretch of five home games in six weeks.

Actually, it's not a mystery to Glendale coach John Cicuto.

``Two things: We turn the ball over way too much,'' Cicuto said, ``and then we're not getting many points in the red zone.''

The game tape in Lyon's office backs this up. Twice this season, against Ventura and Allan Hancock, Glendale (1-2 in the division) fumbled away the ball inside the opponents' 5-yard line. The statistics show Glendale, while averaging just 10 fewer yards of offense per game than Canyons, (390-380) has scored 112 fewer points.

But since both team defenses rank near the bottom of the conference (Canyons is 11th out of 15, Glendale 13th), a shoot-out is possible. But a four-hour game might not happen if the teams can establish their running game, which both will try to do.

Still, Canyons' power is unmistakably from the pass, where Kevin Carrasco has thrown for a conference-leading 1,587 yards and 14 touchdowns. The Cougars (6-1, 3-0) will try to establish the run with Jason Parks (723 yards, 12 touchdowns) and George Garcia, who is healthy again after missing three weeks with an ankle injury.

The offensive line is so banged up that Misi Te'i is being moved back from defensive line. He replaces David Mercado, who hurt his knee last week. Mercado joins Travis Knowles (knee) and John Jackson John Jackson may refer to:

Glendale's power is its balance, the likes of which Canyons hasn't faced this season. The Cougars have had enough success stopping a run-oriented team (Hancock and Compton) or pass-happy squads (Pierce and Glendale).

But the most balanced team Canyons has faced to date, East Los Angeles East Los Angeles, uninc. city (1990 pop. 126,379), Los Angeles co., S Calif., a residential suburb of Los Angeles, in an industrial area. Lyon believes Glendale is more balanced.

Darrell Durham has rushed for 750 yards this season and four touchdowns, and Mike Frost has passed for 1,396 yards and 12 TDs.

``It's gonna be one of those games,'' Lyon said. ``It's gonna be a shootout Shootout
