The championship of the 29th annual College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  Summer Cross Country Series will be tonight at 7 at COC's scenic campus course.

The championship run, which caps a series that has been held every Thursday Thursday: see week.  since July July: see month.  11, will cater to more than 200 runners on its three-mile course, with top finishers receiving trophies.

Other awards will go to the top three finishers in male and female age divisions.

The present course allows for elite runners to succeed because most of it is downhill. Meanwhile, the rest of the pack runs past scenic sites through the middle of the campus, the machine shops at the back of the school, a tough hill on the original trail and an Olympic-style finish on the track inside the football stadium.

This modified course had to be made when construction on a parking lot and buildings on the south end of the school began two years ago.

Canyons cross country coach and series coordinator Lindie Kane said she was happy with the new course because it has easy access to spectators. In order for fans to get to the old cross country course, they had to make a 1-mile climb on the hills before getting to the start/finish line.

Now, with most of the action on the parking lot near Valencia Boulevard, those who wish to watch their friends and family run would not have to walk as far to see them perform.

Kane's goal is to make both runners and fans comfortable so that they keep coming back every year.

``This is a very exciting series,'' Kane said. ``By the last race, we will really start seeing some good times.''

Tonight, runners will be treated to an In-N-Out dinner at the Cougar cougar: see puma.
