The village has a population of 158 (2001). Compton House, formerly the home of the Goodden family, lies outside the village. St Michael's Church is on the estate. . Then one play changed everything about the rivalry between the two Western State Conference schools. As Arrington headed out of bounds on his 16th and final carry, he was blindsided by a person in street clothes on the Compton sideline. Arrington never saw the hit and fell hard to the ground. The referees missed it as well and failed to issue an ejection. But the Cougars players haven't forgotten. Arrington now is at California, but the returning members of the nation's third-ranked team will take the memory of that play into today's 1 p.m. game at Compton. ``We remember that game,'' sophomore center Shawn Huntsinger said. ``They talked a lot of trash and they'll come out fired up. They're good, and we have to be ready to play.'' Cougars coach Chuck Lyon got a taste of what his team will be in for at the usually mundane tape exchange between coaches two weekends ago. Lyon asked one of Compton's coordinators how the Tartars Tartars: see Tatars. Tartars 13th-century rapacious hordes of Genghis Khan. [Medieval Hist.: Brewer Dictionary, 1064] See : Savagery could have lost to West Los Angeles
The answer Lyon received? ``He said, `Coach, all they're interested in is slaying Goliath. They're only interested in you guys.'' And Goliath would be Canyons (5-0, 3-0), which never has lost to Compton (2-3, 2-1). A year ago, the Cougars needed to win big in their final game of the regular season against Compton. Canyons trailed in the Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, regional rankings and also had a conference title at stake. They responded by scoring 63 points and went on to play for a state title. Now Compton is bent on Adj. 1. bent on - fixed in your purpose; "bent on going to the theater"; "dead set against intervening"; "out to win every event" bent, dead set, out to revenge. Lyon passed along the ``Goliath'' quote to his players and reminded them of what happened to Arrington in last year's game. ``Any time you get that attitude,'' Lyon said, ``they're probably going to be playing the game like it's the Super Bowl. This is the game of the year for them.'' ``I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed) "Don't know the trade." A Street expression used whenever one party lacks knowledge of a trade or receives conflicting instructions from the other party. too much,'' sophomore running back Marcus Crawford said, ``just that they want to get after us a little.'' The Cougars also have something to prove after being demoted - for a second time this season without losing a game - from the No. 1 spot in the national JC GridWire rankings. Butler County Butler County is the name of eight counties in the United States:
``We don't even really think about that too much,'' Crawford said. ``We just worry about winning games. The rankings, that kind of stuff, is all for the media and everybody else.'' Compton lost do-everything running back Alvin Marshall from last year's team but returns several talented players. Receiver Joshua Smith ranks among the state leaders with 18 catches for 301 yards and a touchdown. The Tartars also are dangerously fast on defense, Lyon said. Canyon, meanwhile, is banged up along its offensive line, which might be the team's greatest strength. Huntsinger is recovering from a concussion, Nick Longshore long·shore adj. The Cougars will continue to split time between Jason Beck and Will Savage at quarterback. They also would like to establish the run early and hammer away at Compton. Crawford rushed for only 33 yards in Canyons' 47-13 victory Oct. 4 against Santa Barbara, a number that should increase today. --Note: Sophomore defensive tackle Domata Peko was named the 16th best player in the country by JC Football.com.
