``Historically, our team has always gotten better at this time of the year,'' coach Greg Herrick said. ``We try to get ourselves in position at this point because we want to win conference and secure a top seed for the playoffs.''

``It's like a combination lock - (the numbers) are starting to fall into place,'' Herrick said.

Canyons travels to Glendale (12-12, 3-2) today to close out the first round of WSC South Division play. The second half kicks off on Saturday, when the Lady Cougars go on the road again to square off against rival Valley (16-9, 4-1). Both games begin at 5:30 p.m.

All about the Benjamins: Scoring 100 or more points is nothing new to the Lady Cougars. Last year, Canyons accomplished the feat 14 times and completed the season with a 95.7 scoring average, the highest in the history of women's junior collegiate col·le·giate

Lady Cougars have recorded three undefeated seasons and a total 39-3 WSC South record.

WSC update: Freshman forward Tweedy is averaging 19.4 points per game to place second in the WSC South scoring leader list. Unverferth's 16.8 ppg is tied for fifth, while Tumanian is ninth with 14.6 ppg and Mitchell rounds out the top 10 with 13.2 ppg.

Mitchell leads the conference in rebounding with 14.1 per game. Unverferth's 54.8 percent shooting from the field also is tops, as is Narineh Hartoonian's 8.8 assists per game.

Streak snapped: The Canyons men's basketball team collected its first win in the last seven games by defeating host West L.A. 83-63 last Saturday. Woodley Polynice paced the offense with 20 points, followed by 18 from Moses Lindsey, 11 from Charles Madison and 10 from Rahsard Walker. Sophomore guard Bryan Finley, who usually scores in double figures, posted nine points.

``Finley didn't take very many shots, and he didn't need to because everybody else was doing their share,'' coach Lee Smelser said.

The victory against West L.A. followed a tough 77-62 home loss to Santa Monica last Wednesday. In that contest, Finley scored a team-best 20 points, while Polynice and Lindsey each posted 11. Lindsey also registered nine rebounds and six blocks against Santa Monica; at West L.A. he collected 13 rebounds.

``We're getting a little more solid,'' Smelser said. ``Lindsey had his best back-to-back games this week, and Walker and Madison have been playing pretty steady now, game in and game out.''

On Wednesday, the Cougars (9-14, 1-3) will face Glendale (12-11, 2-2) on the road at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, they visit Valley (19-6, 3-1) to start the second round of league action.

Top scorers: Polynice and Finley, the only two sophomores on the Canyons team, rank in the top 10 of the WSC South's scoring leaders. Polynice is in eighth place with a 15.3 ppg mark, and Finley is No. 9, averaging 13.8 per game. Including interdivisional play, however, Finley is in second place with a 20.2 average. Meanwhile, Lindsey's seven rebounds per game is good enough for ninth place in the WSC.
