Narineh Hartoonian, absent two weeks ago because of a wrist injury, also was back. ``I think the team coming together had a lot to do with our win and with me stepping up and playing better,'' Tumanian said. ``I was more focused, making more rebounds and not missing easy layups so much. On the whole, I played a lot smarter (than I have been).'' Before her 15 points against Saddleback, the sophomore forward scored 14 points against Irvine Valley. ``Coach (Greg Herrick) jokes around at practice and says, `Maxine's taking her basketball pills,' '' Tumanian said. ``She's been making some really strong moves inside the basket.'' After a week's worth of rest, next up for Canyons is the Fullerton College Fullerton College, in Fullerton, California, is the oldest community college in continuous operation in California, having been established in 1913. Bad streak: The Canyons men's basketball team is hoping to snap a four-game losing streak when it hosts the Cougar Classic tourney this Saturday through Monday. In last week's Glendale Tournament, the Cougars (3-8) lost their opening-round game to Victory Valley Community College, 84-82, then fell 98-88 to Citrus the following day. We still haven't come out of the woods yet. Hopefully in this next tourney, which is our own, we'll have a better grasp on things and try to come back with renewed interest.'' Smelser said having just one returner from the 1996-97 squad and another from the season prior is the primary reason for his team's delay in achieving chemistry. Those two returners - guards Bryan Finley and Woodley Polynice - continue to carry the team. Finley posted 23 points in each of the two games last week, while Polynice recorded a team-high 25 against Victor Valley and 29 against Citrus. Polynice said his team's second-half performance against Citrus, however, may be a turn-around point for the Cougars. ``We had more teamwork against Citrus,'' Polynice said. ``In the second half, that's the best we've played defensively as a team unit. I think we learned a lot from that game. Now the guys know what we have to do to win.''
