COC NOTES: 30 POINTS MAGIC FOR COC : SOPHOMORE CONTINUES SCORING HIGH NUMBERS.

Unverferth, one of four forwards on the team averaging double figures in scoring, is now tied for 16th place on the 13-school Western State Conference individual scoring list. She is the second-leading scorer on the team, behind 6-foot-4 Canyon High graduate Laura Tweedy, who is shooting 13.6 points per contest. Against the visiting Raiders last Thursday, Unverferth added 18 rebounds to her 30 points, guard Wendy Gussner scored 16 and Tweedy collected 10 points and 10 rebounds. Mitchell - top rebounder in the WSC with an average of 13.1 per game - grabbed 12 rebounds, and guard Narineh Hartoonian posted 11 assists. Hartoonian leads the WSC in assists with an 8.8. average.

``Against Moorpark, we actually stepped up and did well,'' Hartoonian said. ``Shots were going in, and Maxine had 30 points. She's a good player, and she's just going off.''

The tides turned for Canyons two days later however, when the Lady Cougars travelled to Cuesta College Located on the famed California Highway 1 (Pacific Coast Highway), the Cuesta campus is six miles from the beaches of the Pacific Ocean and six miles from San Luis Obispo (SLO).  and returned home with their sixth loss of the season. Anticipated rematch: The Lady Cougars' matchup against Ventura College Ventura College is a California-state funded community college located in Ventura, California. Established in 1925, the college has a 112-acre campus with an enrollment of 13,000 students. The college is part of the Ventura County Community College District.  marks the first meeting between the two teams since the Pirates defeated Canyons in last year's state championship game.

Ventura entered this week with a 19-1 record, while Canyons is 12-6. Both teams lead the WSC in scoring margin. The Pirates are outscoring opponents by an average of 23.9 points, while the Lady Cougars are outscoring theirs by 21.5. Other conference teams with a winning record are outscoring opponents by less than six points.

 when it handed the Cougars an 86-71 loss at Canyons on Saturday. Canyons leading scorer Bryan Finley collected a team-high 23 points, and Woodley Polynice followed with 15. Moses Lindsey, team leader in rebounding with 6.2 per game, grabbed 11 rebounds against the Raiders.

Prior to Saturday's loss, Canyons defeated Oxnard 76-63 on the road last Thursday. Today the team faces Cuesta cuesta (kwĕs`tə), asymmetric ridge characterized by a short, steep escarpment on one side, and a long, gentle slope on the other. The steep side exposes the edge of erosion-resistant rock layers that form the cuestas.  (13-8) on the road at 7 p.m. On Saturday the Cougars host Allan Hancock at 7 p.m.

How they rank: After leading the WSC in scoring last week, Finley enters this week in second place. He is averaging 21.2 points per game, behind Cuesta's Jaron Singletary who is averaging 21.5. Polynice drops from sixth to eighth place with a 16.7 per game clip. He also ranks seventh in 3-point shooting, making 23 of 55 attempts.
