It's been a long haul Long distance. Long haul implies traversing a state or a country. Contrast with short haul.  for College of the Canyons' first-year women's soccer coach Phil Marcellin.

Marcellin, who previously coached at Bakersfield College BC was founded in 1913 and initially housed on the campus of Bakersfield High School (then Kern County Union High School) before moving in 1956 to its current location "on the hill" in northeast Bakersfield. , commutes 150 miles a day from Kern County to Canyons along with his wife Michelle, an instructional lab aide in the chemistry department.

It was an emotional day last week when Canyons defeated Bakersfield 2-0 in the first meeting between the schools in a home match last week. The Cougars followed it up with a 0-0 tie against Glendale to improve to 6-7-1 and 2-4-1 in Western State Conference play.

``It felt good to win, but I felt bad for the players I left behind,'' said Marcellin, who came to Canyons for the opportunity of a fulltime teaching position.

It promises to be a very exhausting day for Marcellin, win or lose, when Canyon faces Bakersfield on the road later this month. Marcellin, who is awaiting completion of a home in the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. Center Mike Motherspaw, forward Sam Harris and guard/forward Dirk Baker are returning starters. Guard Charles Madison and Ron Slater are also back for Canyons, which began workouts this week.

The team has about 45 players participating in winter workouts. Freshmen Anthony Trejo (Crespi), J.J. Rosati and Sean Zortman (Palmdale), Travis Richardson (Hart), Steve Lombardi (Canyon) and Matt Lane (Saugus) have made impressive showings, according to coach Len Mohney.
