Caldwell, who will have surgery, will get a medical redshirt for this season and be eligible to play for the Cougars next year.

With Caldwell out of the lineup, Steve Smith - who proved he was capable of being the featured back before injuries slowed him last year - has flourished, gaining 430 yards (6.4 per carry) and scoring six touchdowns.

COC coach Chuck Lyon says he likes the team's chemistry.

``Our players genuinely like and respect each other and you don't get that all the time,'' he said.

--Ruling expected: A ruling on the disqualification of COC golfer Susan Latch in a WSC golf match is expected by the conference commissioner later this week.

The disqualification came in a match at Santa Barbara Municipal Golf Course after Moorpark coach Will Thurston alleged she and a Santa Barbara City College golfer were given advice by COC coach Gary Peterson.

Peterson said he was explaining a rule regarding the placement of a ball drop on a vertical hazard, and that explaining a rule does not constitute ``advice,'' which is prohibited by conference rules.

Peterson received an e-mail from the United States Golf Association The United States Golf Association (USGA) is the United States' national association of golf courses, clubs and facilities and the governing body of golf for the U.S. and Mexico. Together with The R&A, the USGA produces and interprets the Rules of Golf.  supporting his contention that explaining a rule is not grounds for disqualification.

If the disqualification is overturned, the Cougars (11-2 in the WSC, 12-2 overall) would clinch at least a tie for the conference title. COC has three WSC matches remaining.
