COC NOTEBOOK: WHITTEN SEETHES OVER SEEDING COC FAILED TO GET ROLE PLAYING HOST.

Byline: Scott Magoloff Staff Writer

VALENCIA - The junior college softball College softball is softball as played on the intercollegiate level at institutions of higher education, predominantly in the United States. College softball is played by women at the intercollegiate level, whereas college baseball is played by men.  seeding committee might not have literally stolen something from College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. Whitten hoped to be voted into the No. 4 seeding from No. 5 at the Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. ``We got had,'' said Whitten, who participated in the seeding meeting as the Western State Conference's representative. ``Needless to say, I was very upset. . . . They gave it to them because of who they were, not necessarily who they are.''

To host a playoff would have been a reward for COC's record-breaking season in which it became the first WSC WSC Winter Symposium on Chemometrics

Valarie Reyes said. ``We got the news (Monday) and we were bummed. It seems like it was political; you know, who wants to vote against the two-time defending state champion?

``We're going to show them that we deserved the opportunity to host. . . . Last year we wanted to play Cypress but never got the opportunity. From the girls that came back from last year, we want Cypress. We want that team.''

Ironically, the Cougars were supposed to play Cypress in their tournament in February, but it was rained out and could not be made up. Whitten said the other voters tried to point out that COC did not play tough competition in its tournaments this year. Although Whitten said he refuted the point during the heated argument, he was not able to say he'd beaten Cypress.

The Cougars played perhaps the toughest tournament schedule they had in years this season. Two tournaments were reserved for defending conference champions only.

``How can you bring down my team, saying we didn't play tough enough competition in the tournaments - we were in the same tournaments as Cypress,'' Whitten said. ``I can't help that the organizer didn't put me in the same bracket with, quote, the powerhouse teams. So next year I'll have to whine and cry like a baby to everyone who's putting on a tournament that they better put me in the bracket with, quote, the power teams.

``And if I beat all of them, what are you going to do to me next year?''

``I'm going to miss it - I'm hoping this weekend isn't our last weekend,'' Reyes said. ``I really want to go on and play (in the state tournament). I've played this game for 15 years and I'm going to miss it. It's been a great run the last couple of years.''

Reyes said she might eventually return to the game as a coach. For now, she can focus on the playoffs and No. 15 Pasadena City College (25-15), which is COC's first opponent in the Southern California Regionals at noon on Saturday at Cypress.
