COC NOTEBOOK: KNEE PAIN HOLDS COC'S SCHWEITZER BACK.

Byline: Rizza Yap Daily News Staff Writer

Knee trouble kept Breanne Schweitzer from finishing in the top seven of the Western State Conference cross country championships on Thursday, but she held on to earn 11th place and second-team all-conference honors.

Cougars coach Lindie Heck said Schweitzer, No. 1 runner for the College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  women's team, ran with a sore knee that drastically slowed her down in the upgrades. The injury, which comes and goes, has persisted since Schweitzer ran for Saugus High.

Schweitzer completed the Ventura College Ventura College is a California-state funded community college located in Ventura, California. ``She was in 16th place in the first mile, so I knew right away that she was not going to run her best race,'' Heck said. ``She was fine in the downhill and rolling hills Rolling hills are like a mountain chain, only a "hill chain" of hills that roll on and on continually. You will often find them in between plains and mountains, near major rivers, or randomly anywhere. The only places without rolling hills are deserts and flood plains. , (but) she said her knee was killing her in the uphill.''

In the second upgrade Schweitzer fell to 20th, behind teammate Jasmine jasmine (jăs`mĭn, jăz–) or jessamine (jĕs`əmĭn), any plant of the genus Jasminum of the family Oleaceae (olive family).  Nutter.  race. Nutter, who placed in the mid-30s in two previous conference meets this season, completed the tough Ventura College course in 23:44 for 19th place. She received all-conference honorable mention.

``Based on Jasmine's past performances, I figured she'd be in the 20s,'' coach Lindie Heck said. ``That was a very big improvement for her. She ran a very smart race, very aggressive.''

For the men's team, No. 1 runner Hector Chavez, who qualified for the state meet two years ago before redshirting last season, also received all-conference honorable mention by placing 27th with a time of 23:44. The winning time, set by a Glendale runner, was 21:20. Clark Schuyler came in 34th place, while Alfredo Chama placed 39th.

Last year, Canyons finished the season 7-2 in league with one loss to Pierce and another to Bakersfield, the same schools who handed them their two league losses.

``We're not going to lose another match - we still have the ability to play like we did last year,'' said sophomore Andrea Koman, who added that the team's early season request for tougher practices from coach Lisa Mosier has not been fulfilled. ``We're all very frustrated frus·trate
