COC NOTEBOOK: HOME ISN'T HELPFUL FOR COC.

The College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  men's basketball team might want to petition Western State Conference officials to stage all of its games against West L.A. College on the road or at a neutral site.

That's because West L.A., from Culver City Culver City, city (1990 pop. 38,793), Los Angeles co., S Calif., a residential suburb of Los Angeles; inc. 1917. It is a center of the U.S. motion-picture industry, whose roots in the city date to c.1915. Its chief manufactures are rubber products and computers. , boasts a better record (4-0) this season at COC's Cougar cougar: see puma.

Dabo Kabov, who scored 20 points to lead West L.A. (14-10, 5-3), hit a 3-pointer with four seconds remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime.

. The Cougars (14-8, 7-1) rebounded with a 77-72 victory Wednesday at Valley (10-14, 5-3) to retain a two-game lead in the South Division.

COC, which rallied to win several close games in the first half of divisional play, led West L.A. 61-55 with two minutes to play.

University of Houston-bound forward Carlton Spencer's 3-pointer gave the Cougars - ranked No. 20 in the state by the California Community College Men's Basketball Coaches Association - an advantage with 26 seconds remaining.

Martinez scored on West L.A.'s next possession, and Spencer, who scored 16 points with eight rebounds and eight assists, made two free throws with 11 seconds left for a three-point COC lead.

In the five-minute overtime, West L.A. built a three-point lead before a pair of steals by Spencer helped COC take a 72-71 lead.

West L.A. regained the lead on free throws, and Spencer missed two 3- point attempts at the end of the game.

COC today plays host to Santa Monica Santa Monica (săn`tə mŏn`ĭkə), city (1990 pop. 86,905), Los Angeles co., S Calif., on Santa Monica Bay; inc. 1886. Tourism and retailing are important, and the city has motion-picture, biotechnology, and software industries.  (9-13, 0-7) at 5:30 p.m. The Cougars rallied from a 22-point halftime deficit Jan. 12 to beat Santa Monica 86-82.

--Back on track: After ending its first three-game WSC South Division losing streak in a decade, the COC women's basketball team responded with two of its most impressive victories of the season.

The Cougars defeated West L.A. and Valley to remain tied for second place with Bakersfield (14-9, 5-3). Citrus (18-6, 8-0), winner of 10 in a row, is in first place.

COC defeated host Valley 65-40 Wednesday night, its second 25-point victory this season over the Monarchs (13-13, 3-5). The Cougars won 99-74 on Jan. 8.

COC (13-10, 5-3) stopped its losing streak last weekend with a 92-62 victory over West L.A. (10-11, 3-5). Four Cougars scored in double figures.
