``In the Irvine Valley game we didn't rebound and we didn't shoot well. This game we proved that we could do it,'' COC forward Siosi Tuli said after the Cougars' victory over Ventura. Tuli, COC's leading scorer with 14 points, cemented the victory with 30 seconds remaining in the game when she put back her own missed layup, which gave the Cougars a 68-61 lead. ``We showed what type of team we could really be,'' guard/forward Vonetta Lanier said. ``Coach (Greg Herrick) asked us to step it up and play hard for 40 minutes and we really did that. We really came together and now this is a brand-new team.'' Lanier said she was not surprised the Cougars won. ``Our coach instilled so much confidence in us all week that we knew we could do it,'' she said. Herrick said his players deserved the right to bask in the glory of their dramatic victory, but warned they can't afford to lose perspective. ``It's just another game,'' he said. ``It was a great win, and it goes a long way to establish ourselves, but when we go play next week, they're not going to care whether we won or lost.'' The Cougars look to build on their recent success when they play at the three-day De Anza Tournament in Cupertino, which begins Thursday. |
