A victory would likely earn the Cougars a rematch at 5 p.m. Tuesday with the state's top-ranked team, Pasadena (11-0), which handed coach Greg Herrick's team its most lopsided loss of the season with an 82-46 setback in the final of Pasadena's Rose City Classic on Dec. 11.

But the Cougars also need to learn how to close out games against quality opponents if they hope to make a deep postseason run in February.

COC lost to Cypress 79-78 in the final 10 seconds and lost to Mt. SAC 80-74 in overtime. The Cougars beat Ventura 75-74 but closed out their homestand with an 82-72 loss to Riverside, COC's second setback of the season against the Tigers. COC received 31 points from Jessi Loring (Saugus High) and 18 from Burroughs of Burbank graduate Janette Galindo, but their production was offset by the team's 26 turnovers.

--Comforts of home: COC's men's basketball team hasn't played since a 76-63 win against Barstow on Dec. 11, but it shouldn't have any trouble finding its rhythm with three home games in its own Cougar cougar: see puma.

--More recognition: COC football coach Chuck Lyon said the two-week period that encompassed the Cougars' preparation for the Southern California championship game and the state final also meant a steady stream of coaches from four-year college programs in his office than at any other time during his seven-year tenure.

The pursuit of so many COC players was understandable, especially athletes such as sophomore Jason Thompkins, who led all kickers in the state with 108 points and was recognized as a first-team All-American by JC Grid-Wire and the JC Athletic Bureau.

Tyrell Smith earned second-team All-America honors by JC Grid-Wire after concluding his sophomore season with 97 catches for 1,219 yards and 11 touchdowns. Smith, who recently committed to San Diego State, finished his career with 141 receptions for 2,318 yards and 23 touchdowns, all program records.

Sophomore defensive lineman Dennis Ellis was also a second-team All- America selection by JC Grid-Wire after recording 78 tackles and 16.5 sacks.

Sophomore offensive lineman James Paulk, who paved the way for a rushing attack that gained for 2,261 yards and scored 41 touchdowns, was selected to the JC Athletic Bureau's All-America first team, along with sophomore linebacker Jerrod Perry (104 tackles, six sacks) and sophomore defensive back Roshawn Marshall (24 tackles, two interceptions, 434 return yards). Perry recorded 13 tackles in the COC's 39-32 victory against City College of San Francisco in the state championship game.

Ellis, Paulk, Perry, Marshall, Smith and Thompkins were also recognized to JC Athletic Bureau's Region III All-California first team. Lyon, who guided COC to the first 14-0 season in JC football history, was recognized as JC Athletic Bureau's Coach of the Year.
