COC NOTEBOOK: COC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM NOT SURPRISED WITH TOUGH DRAW.

Byline: Gideon Rubin Staff Writer

VALENCIA - Don't blame the seeding committee.

At least that's the opinion of College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  women's basketball Women's basketball is one of the few games which developed in tandem with men's. It became popular, spreading from the east coast of the United States to the west coast, in large part via women's colleges.  coach Greg Herrick, who said although he's not thrilled about being seeded seventh in the California Community College State Championship tournament - the Cougars are in a bracket In programming, brackets (the [ and ] characters) are used to enclose numbers and subscripts. For example, in the C statement int menustart [4] = ; the [4] indicates the number of elements in the array, and the contents are enclosed in curly braces.  that includes second-seeded Ventura, the three-time defending state champion - his team has nobody to blame but itself.

It could've been worse.

Canyons (24-6) will host No. 26 Golden West (11-17) on Saturday night. If the Cougars advance past the first round, they'd host the winner of Saturday's game between No. 10 Fullerton (21-10) and No. 23 Southwestern (14-14) in the second round Wednesday.

It could've been a lot better, though.

Canyons would have likely been seeded no worse than fifth if it held on to a four-point lead in the final minute of an eventual loss to Valley last Saturday that cost the Cougars a share of the Western State Conference title.

A fifth seed would have meant it would've been two home games away from a rematch REMATCH Cardiology Clinical trials–Randomized Evaluation of Mechanical Assistance Therapy as an alternative in Congestive Heart failure–related to use of a portable, electric left ventricular-assist system–LVAS–eg, HeartMate®  with Valley - albeit on the road - in the regional finals. That would probably have been the Cougars' easiest road to the state championships, which will be held at the University of San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay.  from March 13-16.

``I would have liked another shot at L.A. Valley,'' Herrick said. ``I think we showed that we can beat them, but as far as the seeding goes, you make your own bed and that's why we're where we're at.''

sophomore center Julianna Diaz, just like last season, Canyons is viewing the playoffs as a second chance.

``We want to prove to everybody that we're capable of beating good teams and the playoffs are definitely a way to show it,'' she said. ``It's something that's on all of our minds.''

Although it might be tempting to look ahead, Diaz said the team's focus now is exclusively on Golden West.

``It's Saturday now, and if we do win on Saturday then we'll look to the next game,'' she said. ``Knowing that every game could be our last is definitely an incentive to play that much harder.''

--Very doubtful: Freshman forward Grace Coronado, who has been sidelined for more than a month with a knee injury, hasn't recovered from a setback setback

--Difficult road: Despite a strong finish - the men's basketball team won four of its past six conference games - the Cougars (10-19) are seeded 27th in the state tournament and will open on the road Saturday night against No. 6 Oxnard.

If Canyons survives the first round, it would play on the road against the winner of Saturday's game between No. 11 Cerritos (21-11) and No. 22 San Diego Mesa (17-13) on Wednesday night.
