He is the top seed in the shot put and will also compete in the discus and hammer throw. The Cougars could have a lot of athletes advance in field events with Ralph Butler entered in the high and long jumps, Brian Belue and Gerrell Cain in the long and triple jumps and Kaafi in the triple jump. The three athletes were among 251 recipients from 100 colleges across the nation. Gomez, an all-state and All-American runner for Canyons' cross-country and track teams, is the holder of nearly all of the school's distance records. She is considered by assistant strength coach Matt Durant as the best female cross-country runner in program history. Stanton, a defensive lineman on the state and national championship football team last fall, has signed with Michigan State.
