COC NOTEBOOK: COC NOT REWARDED BY POLLS.

The College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  men's basketball team was one of the hottest in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  the second half of the regular season, winning five consecutive games and 13 of 14.

The Cougars' reward for their efforts was a No. 17 ranking in the final California Community College Men's Basketball Coaches Association state top 20 poll, including a No. 9 ranking in Southern California.

That spot in the regional poll should have given COC See chip on chip.  (18-8) a first-round matchup with No. 8 L.A. Southwest (18-9), the third-place team in the South Coast Conference's South Division. Instead, because of a glitch A temporary or random hardware malfunction. The Cougars will depend on University of Houston-bound small forward Carlton Spencer, who averaged 23.1 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.7 assists during the regular season. Curtis Dunwoody is averaging 16.7 points and shooting 40.2 percent from behind the 3-point arc, and Cedric Davis has contributed 8.7 points and 6.7 rebounds per game.

That trio led COC to an 11-1 record in the Western State Conference South Division and the team's second consecutive division title. They'll have to post similar numbers tonight to defeat Desert, which is led by conference co-most valuable player Earl Isaacson, who averaged 27.1 points and 9.9 rebounds during the regular season.

Sophomore guard Mike Lang averaged 14 points, 6.4 rebounds and 3.2 assists and Reuben Mitchell averaged 9.7 rebounds for the Roadrunners.

--Tough loss, bad seed: The COC women's basketball team (16-11) saw its bid for a favorable seed in the Southern California Regional playoffs take a serious hit Saturday with a 91-87 loss at Bakersfield.

 South Division, but it also gave Bakersfield (18-9) the No. 12 seed and dropped COC to No. 14. That meant the difference between COC playing at No. 3 Antelope Valley (28-2) - which it will at 7 tonight in a first-round contest - and No. 5 Cypress (23-5). The Cougars lost to Cypress 79-78 on Dec. 15.

AVC is riding a 19-game winning streak en route to earning the highest seed in the program's history. COC - which had won five in a row entering the Bakersfield game - has shown flashes of last season's dominance, but has been hurt by inconsistency.

AVC has only two players averaging double figures (Mariqueta Starling starling, any of a group of originally Old World birds that have become distributed worldwide. Starlings were brought to New York in 1890; since then the common starling (Sturnus vulgaris) has spread throughout North America.  at 14.6 points and RaChauna Randle at 11.7) compared to COC's four, but the Marauders have much more depth on the bench than the Cougars.

COC needs big games from Jessi Loring (17.7 points, 11.8 rebounds), Erica Doyle (15.5 points, 12.6 assists, 4.1 steals), Janette Galindo (13.8 points) and Alli Weier (11.9 points) to win.
