COC NOTEBOOK: COC FORWARD SET FOR RETURN.

Byline: Gideon Rubin Staff Writer

VALENCIA - Nobody has taken the College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  men's basketball team's recent struggles harder than David Hungerford.

on his left foot six weeks ago and could only watch as the Cougars lost three of their first four Western State Conference games.

But after making a quicker-than-expected recovery, Hungerford now hopes to make a difference. He began practicing with the team Monday and was expected to play - albeit in a limited role - on Thursday night, when the Cougars hosted Bakersfield.

``Just being not physically able to play was killing me, and we were struggling too and that made it even harder because I couldn't do anything about it,'' Hungerford said.

Hungerford's return is timely. The Cougars (7-15, 1-3) were coming off two tough losses (72-52 to West L.A. and 68-52 to Santa Monica Santa Monica (săn`tə mŏn`ĭkə), city (1990 pop. 86,905), Los Angeles co., S Calif., on Santa Monica Bay; inc. 1886. ``We're all excited about being able to pick our season,'' Hungerford said. ``I'm glad that I'm coming back now and not in the middle of conference play.''

Hungerford, who is being recruited by several Division II programs, including UC Davis and Cal Poly Cal Poly may refer to:

When he's healthy, he gives Canyons a strong low-post presence, as well as an outside shot that, given his size, presents opponents with matchup problems.

``It's a shot in the arm,'' Canyons coach Howard Fisher said of his return. ``He can really help us.''

Hungerford will have time to rest his foot this week. The Cougars have a bye Saturday and don't play again until Thursday at Valley.

The good news for the Cougars (19-4, 4-1) is that with a bye Saturday, they have time to evaluate the injuries. Their next game is Wednesday, when they play at Valley for a share of first place in the Southern Division.

Coronado is questionable for the Valley game. Diaz's injury is thought to be less serious.

``We've got some problems,'' Canyons coach Greg Herrick said. ``We're not very deep anyway, but we'll just have to devise a plan to adjust to what we have.''
