Byline: Rizza Yap Daily News Staff Writer

College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  javelin thrower Scott Dardanelle exceeded his personal best by 13 feet last Saturday to take first place in the Western State Conference preliminary meet held at Santa Barbara City College As of 2004, total enrollment of full-time and part-time students reached 17,000. It is currently led by President John Romo, who will be retiring at the end of Spring 2008 after seven years with the institution. . Dardanelle threw 168-4 and will vie for a top-eight finish in this Saturday's conference finals, also at Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850. .

Field events will begin at 12 p.m. and track events will kick off at 2 p.m. Nine participants will compete in each event and the top eight will move on to the Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  Regional. The Antelope Valley
joined the WSC this year - becoming the conference's 13th member - only seven WSC athletes could advance to the regional tournament.

Already gearing up for the Southern Cal meet is Manju Mohan, who participated in Monday's hammer throw finals at Moorpark College. (Santa Barbara does not have a hammer-throw facility.) Her 104-foot throw, six feet above her personal best, was good enough for eighth, the last qualifying spot for regionals.

``The goal now is to move on as many people as we can to Southern Cals,'' Cougars coach Lindie Heck said. ``Manju's already made it, and now we have to get more bodies.''

Late bloomers: Canyons softball coach Ray Whitten said his team is finally reaching its summit. After a bleak month of March that saw four consecutive losses in one period, the Lady Cougars are closing up April by entering the week in a three-way tie for first place in the WSC South Division, sporting a 7-3 conference record along with Pierce and Bakersfield.

and shortstop Karla Nanne lead the WSC South in hitting, each with a .500 batting average. In all, the team is batting .316 in conference, compared to a .154 average at the start of the season.

``We don't do anything different, it just started to come,'' Whitten said. ``They're doing what they were capable of doing all season, it just took a while to get it all together. Some teams jell early, or they peak early. We didn't really start jelling until our conference play began.

``That's a lot better than winning every game in the beginning and losing everything in the end.''

Stacy Champy also looks improved in the pitcher's circle. In last Thursday's 6-0 victory against Glendale, the sophomore struck out 13 and pitched the season's first no-hitter in the WSC.

and to wrap up the regular season.

Dominators: Canyons golf coach Gary Peterson is used to winning seasons. He even knew, based on last year's finish, that his 1998 team would be good. It features four returners, two talented freshmen and a newcomer from Canada who emerged from the woodwork sooner than expected. Together, they have catapulted Canyons to a 31-1 record. Now six of them are in the running for WSC's Golfer of the Year.

The Cougars compose the conference's top six - with averages ranging from 74.6 to 78.3 - starting with freshman Carlos Robledo (Hart High) in first place, followed by Kyle Brandt (Canada), Alex Kuyumjian (Westlake High) and sophomore returners Justin Rockey, Ben Krug and Justin Solberg.

``There's a chance we could have six guys tie for Golfer of the Year. It's a very slim chance, but it's exciting,'' Peterson said. ``The award is determined by 10 rounds, plus throwing out the three worst scores. From Carlos to Ben, it's 14 shots, and we've got two rounds left to go.''

Krug was the Cougars' top player in Monday's WSC match at Bakersfield Country Club.
