COC NOTEBOOK: CANYONS WOMEN NEAR RECORD START.

Byline: Heather Gripp Staff Writer

VALENCIA - Greg Herrick is holding off on thoughts of a state title run. But he has discarded dis·card

the idea of a rebuilding season.

A month ago, Herrick simply was hoping his young College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  women's basketball Women's basketball is one of the few games which developed in tandem with men's. The Cougars, who had no returning starters, were off to a 2-2 start.

However, they haven't lost since, giving Canyons its second-best start in team history. The Cougars enter tonight's home game against Mt. San Antonio College Mt. ``It's unbelievable,'' Herrick said of the turnaround.

started Nov. 20 with a 79-56 victory over Oxnard in the Western State Conference interdivisional opener. The Cougars (11-2) added a championship at the Pasadena tournament to the list two weeks later.

``The confidence just started developing,'' Herrick said. ``We just got on a roll. We're doing things now that in the past we've done earlier with experienced players. It was just a matter of the players responding to the system we already had in place.

``I said earlier, I thought we'd be a good team. I just didn't know if it'd be next week, next month or next season. It came sooner than I thought. ... The last time we had a start this good, we were state runner-up. We're not thinking state now, but things are going pretty well.''

Sophomore forward Grace Coronado is playing one of the biggest roles in the Cougars' success. She ranks second on the team in scoring (13.8) and rebounding (8.2). She had 40 points and 12 rebounds in Tuesday's victory over Pierce, in which she was 18 of 21 from the field.

Other key contributors include sophomore forward Julianna Diaz, who is averaging a team-high 9.5 rebounds, and freshman guard Kaipresha Price, who leads the conference with an average of eight assists a game.

Canyons leads the state in scoring with an average of 85.6 points while giving up an average of only 64.6 points.

--Injury report: The women's basketball team expects to be without leading scorer Marissa Meadows until the start of division play. The sophomore forward ranked fifth in the conference with an average of 16.1 points a game before being diagnosed with a hairline fracture hairline fracture

Meadows played in pain for about a week, but it became severe enough she sat out the second half of Friday's game against Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850. , after which she went to the doctor for the diagnosis. Meadows hasn't played since, but because she doesn't have a cast on the foot, she started riding an exercise bike during practice this week in hopes of staying in shape as much as possible.

``We're going to watch her and keep her out for a while, because we want her back and healthy for conference,'' Herrick said.

Price sprained an ankle last week against East L.A., but she hasn't missed any games.
