COC NOTEBOOK: BOTH BASKETBALL TEAMS NEED WORK.

Byline: Lee Barnathan Daily News Staff Writer

The games never were in doubt, but that doesn't mean the coaches were happy.

True, College of the Canyons' basketball teams earned opening-night victories at home last week, the men beating Santa Ana Santa Ana, city, El Salvador

Wins to start the season are fine, but there are plenty of aspects that need addressing. A closer look:

coach Lee Smelser, was the shooting. The Cougars shot well in the first half and Santa Ana had a good second half.

``We had excellent intensity in the first half,'' Smelser said. ``We were tired of scrimmaging against ourselves. We were ready to play somebody and we took it out on Santa Ana.''

Sophomore guard Charles Madison, the team's leading returning scorer, led with 19 points. Sophomore forward Sam Harris Sam Harris may refer to:

had 18 points and new point guard Eurskine Robinson had 17.

The Cougars next played Tuesday at Allan Hancock in a Western State Conference interdivision game. Traditionally, interdivision play doesn't begin until December, but Smelser convinced Hancock officials to switch the game to avoid having to play three times during the first week of January.

Besides, Smelser would like to get the four-hour trip out of the way.

``It's always a drag to go up there,'' he said.

Women: The Lady Cougars performed just as assistant coach Harlan Perlman expected, down to the inconsistent freshmen.

``We would have liked to execute better,'' Perlman said for coach Greg Herrick, who has laryngitis laryngitis, inflammation of the mucous membrane of the voice box, or larynx, usually accompanied by hoarseness, sore throat, and coughing. Acute laryngitis is often a secondary bacterial infection triggered by infecting agents causing such illnesses as colds, . ``We need to get more efficient and we will. I told them, `It's like drunk driving. You can drive drunk and you can make it home safe and you think you're OK. But it's not right.' ''

, the players still don't see that playing with inconsistencies (turnovers, fouls, poor shot selection) won't lead to victories down the road. This young team doesn't see it yet and Perlman is concerned it won't until it loses.

Perlman said first-game nerves played a role, but the overall high energy level was nice to see.

Stephanie Wasserman made better decisions at guard and scored eight points, and forward Liz Grey only scored four points but provided stability for the freshmen by playing in the proper offensive and defensive schemes. Perlman said these players need to see somebody doing it right.
