COC NOTEBOOK: BIG FALL LIFTS COC TO THIRD IN ALL-SPORTS STANDINGS.

VALENCIA - A time filled with record-setting performances by College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  sports teams earned the Cougars a spot among the Western State Conference's top-three most successful programs in the fall.

 Athletic Supremacy title is awarded at the end of the school year based on points given for teams' finishes in conference standings. Among the Cougars' fall highlights were division titles by the football and women's soccer teams, which both went undefeated during division play and set team records for victories. The women's golf team won the WSC title and its first state title.

The women's volleyball volleyball, outdoor or indoor ball and net game played on a level court. An upright net, 3 ft (or 1 m) high, the top of which stands 8 ft (2.43 m) from the ground for men, 7 ft 4 1/8 in (2.  and cross-country teams finished third in conference.

The Cougars' 43 fall points earned toward the Supremacy award are more than half the total earned by COC in 2000-01.

--Honors: The strong showing by COC's fall teams meant numerous all-conference selections for the Cougars.

The women's soccer team, which won its third consecutive division title, was among the most decorated. The Cougars had 11 players earn conference recognition, and coach Phil Marcellin was named coach of the year. Freshman forward/midfielder Heather Collins and sophomores Tessa Barnett, Lisa Jeppson, Kristine Marbach and Nicole Modugno received first-team honors.

Other honorees include Whitney Phillips of the women's cross-country team. She repeated as a first-team selection and teammates Katie Pielow and Jocelyn Ontiveros made the second team.

Sophomore driver Hayley Jones made the women's water polo water polo, swimming game encompassing features of soccer, football, basketball, and hockey. The object of the game is to maneuver, by head, feet, or hand, a leather-covered ball 27 to 28 in.  first team.

The football team had the most honorees, with 11 players selected to the first team, which was announced a few weeks ago.

--Record finish: The football team's school-record 10 consecutive victories to end the season earned the Cougars their highest-ever finish in state and regional polls. COC was ranked sixth in the recently released final state poll and fourth in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, .

The Cougars went 10-1, including the program's first bowl victory.

COC was ranked No. 11 nationally in JC Grid-Wire's final season poll.
